Community leaders and volunteers gathered at the Montgomery County Job Center on Friday, January 27, to mark EITC Awareness Day in Dayton. The event kicks off tax season and attempts to educate the public how workers can take advantage of free tax return preparation and the federal Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Child Tax Credit (CTC).
Also announced was the February 4 "Super Refund Saturday" (sponsored by KeyBank), at which IRS-trained volunteer tax preparers will complete and file tax returns for eligible taxpayers at no charge.
EITC and CTC are two of the nation's largest anti-poverty programs, helping to lift over six million people out of poverty each year, including more than three million children. The tax credits are more valuable than ever, ranging from $506 for workers with no dependents to $6,269 for some families.
Eligible taxpayers must file a federal income tax return in order to claim the credits. More information on the free tax services, including locations and hours, is available from United Way HelpLink at 937-913-2000 and at daytonohio.gov/eitc.
