[ARCHIVED] National Groundwater Awareness Week


GWAW2waterTest018 (#GWAW2018)  is a platform to encourage yearly water well testing and well maintenance to prevent waterborne illnesses.  

The City of Dayton Department of Water offers lab services to help customers.

We offer fast and affordable contract lab testing services to help you ensure your water meets all applicable quality and health standards.

  • Maintain compliance
  • Ensure health and safety
  • Includes tests for metals, nitrates, bacteria, and more


  • Small water system operators (i.e., trailer park communities, businesses, etc.)
  • Smaller municipalities
  • Residential well owners   


The City of Dayton Department of Water joins National Groundwater Association to participate in an annual observance of the National Ground Water Awareness Week.   During the week of March 12-16, 2018 the Department of Water will provide you:

Here are some facts about groundwater use:

  1. Only 1 percent of the water on Earth is useable.
  2. The United States uses 349 billion gallons of freshwater every day.
  3.  Groundwater accounts for 33 percent of all the water used by U.S. municipalities.
  4. 44 percent of the U.S. population depends on groundwater for its drinking water supply.
  5. More than 13.2 million households have their own well, representing 34 million people.
  6. 53.5 billion gallons of groundwater are used for agricultural irrigation each day. In 1990 that number was 2.2 billion.
  7. Groundwater is the world’s most extracted raw material with withdrawal rates in the estimated range of 259 trillion gallons per year.
