Each winter, Dayton homes are open to the risk of their in-home plumbing freezing with the dropping temperatures. To prevent your water pipes from freezing, or to thaw pipes which have already frozen, follow the suggestions below:
- As temperatures fall below freezing, ensure that warm air gets to your home's outside walls where pipes are most susceptible to freezing. If possible, insulate exposed pipes with pipe sleeves.
- Disconnect, drain and store water hoses away for the season.
- Keep your thermostat set to a warm temperature consistently--day and night, as well as when you're not at home (at least 55 degrees F).
- Open cabinet doors under the sink. This allows warm air from your home to circulate and have more direct contact with the pipes. If pipes are frozen, place a small space heater in or near the under-sink cabinet.
- Let your water trickle from faucets served by pipes along outside walls. Running water through the pipe this way helps prevent pipes from freezing.
- If you experience problems with frozen pipes, contact a plumber.
