Dayton Senior Safe Program
Dayton Fire Department's Lifesaving Outreach to Seniors
In an inspiring act of community care, the Dayton Fire Department has launched a proactive initiative to check in on senior residents through wellness calls. Recognizing that older adults may be more vulnerable to isolation, medical emergencies, or extreme weather conditions, the fire department is going beyond the firehouse to protect those most at risk.
The program involves regular phone calls and text messages to seniors, especially those who live alone or have limited mobility. Fire Department personnel will reach out with genuine concern, asking simple but important questions: "Are you feeling okay today?" "Is your home safe and warm?" "Do you have everything you need?" These conversations not only assess physical safety but also offer companionship and a sense of security.
Wellness checks like these can be lifesaving. Every month Dayton Fire gets delayed notifications for assistance because people can’t call 911 due to a fall, a medical emergency, or worse. We hope this program will help speed up those notifications and bring reassurance to our vulnerable populations.
In other programs of calling at-risk individuals, firefighters have identified medical issues, arranged transport to hospitals, or ensured prescriptions were filled. But just as importantly, the initiative strengthens ties between first responders and the community. Seniors know they're not forgotten; they have allies looking out for them.
The program also helps ease strain on emergency services by preventing crises before they escalate. It's a compassionate and strategic initiative that reflects Dayton's commitment to protecting every resident, not just in emergencies, but in everyday life.
In a world where isolation can be as dangerous as any blaze, Dayton's fire and emergency medical personnel are proving that care, connection, and service are the true hallmarks of the Dayton Fire Department's work.
