Jean de Dieu Mukunzi, originally from Rwanda in east-central Africa, made the courageous decision to come to the United States in 2008 in search of peace and greater opportunities. Upon arriving, he faced significant challenges, including limited English proficiency, which made it difficult to access healthcare and other community resources.

Overcoming Challenges and Pursuing Education

Determined to succeed, Jean de Dieu worked hard to learn advanced English in just four months. With his newfound skills, he enrolled at Wright State University, where he pursued a master’s degree in public health. His motivation for furthering his education was not only to improve his own life but to better support fellow new Americans in navigating the complexities of the U.S. healthcare system.

Professional Journey and Impact

Over the years, Jean de Dieu has worked with numerous organizations, including the United States International Counsel of People with Disabilities, CareSource Management Group, Premier Health Partners, Montgomery County Department of Public Health, and the Ohio State University Medical Center. His dedication and hard work ultimately led him to become the Population Health Project Manager at the Ohio State University.

Creating Ebenezer Healthcare Access

In 2019, Jean de Dieu’s desire to help immigrants overcome language and cultural barriers in accessing healthcare and community resources led him to co-found the nonprofit organization Ebenezer Healthcare Access, located in the MacFarlane neighborhood in Dayton. This organization partners with local health systems, academic institutions, and immigrant community leaders to ensure that new Americans can access the care they need. Today, Ebenezer Healthcare Access serves thousands in the Dayton area, with expanded services in Cincinnati and Columbus. The organization has made a profound impact in the community, recently being recognized with a 2024 Health Hero Award by the Ohio Commission on Minority Health for its grassroots efforts.

Making a Difference in Dayton

Jean de Dieu felt welcomed in Dayton from the very beginning. When he first arrived, kind-hearted people hosted him, provided food, and helped him navigate his new life. Their support, along with opportunities to serve on various committees with local residents, made him feel at home. As a result, Jean de Dieu has committed himself to giving back to his community. Through Ebenezer Healthcare Access, he continues to make significant contributions, employing 37 community health workers and serving diverse populations from across Africa, Europe, Latin America, and the United States.

He believes the city’s strong policies and commitment to promoting diversity make it a promising place for people from all backgrounds. Looking ahead, Jean de Dieu envisions Dayton as a city free from health and employment disparities, where everyone has equal access to opportunities and resources.
