Darsheel Kaur moved with her family to the United States from England in 1993. Originally from India, her parents settled in Beavercreek, Ohio, and worked at the VA Hospital. Darsheel grew up in Beavercreek and graduated from Beavercreek High School. Throughout her childhood and adolescence, she actively participated in school sports and youth bhangra dancing within the Sikh Society of Dayton.

Navigating Multiple Cultures

As an immigrant, Darsheel found the process of navigating multiple cultures to be both challenging and empowering. Her experiences in school and later in life deepened her ability to understand and appreciate cultural differences. She recalls several teachers who made her feel welcome, including Mr. Marshall at Beavercreek High School and an English professor in college who encouraged her to share her life stories. She was also inspired by classes that highlighted diverse worldviews, such as Africana Studies at Sinclair and Non-Western Religions at Wright State University. Mentors like Dr. Agiro at Wright State also supported her unique gifts, fueling her passion for cultural understanding.

Building Community and Contributing to Dayton

Darsheel has made significant contributions to the City of Dayton, both professionally and personally. She has spoken at Interfaith events, designed and coordinated the Welcome Belmont leadership program for Welcome Dayton, and mentored youth through organizations like Seeds of Peace and Neighborhood Kids. She has also facilitated community workshops focused on collective healing, peacebuilding, and restorative practices.

Darsheel founded HeArt Dayton, a community healing and gathering space in Dayton’s Five Oaks neighborhood, where artists, educators, activists, and healing practitioners come together to support one another. She continues to work to strengthen trust and collaboration within the broader HeArt Dayton community. Additionally, she teaches Cultural Humility for Working with Youth at Wright State University and offers a virtual course on Cultural Healing & Ancient Innovation (CHAI) for community leaders. Through her business, Circle of Roots, Darsheel facilitates community education and healing as a consultant, and co-hosts holistic well-being gatherings in collaboration with business partners such as Healing Mind sound mediation and Honey & Sage Bonfire.

Vision for Dayton's Future

Darsheel envisions a future for Dayton that embraces its growing diversity and builds on the spirit of cultural exchange. She believes that if the community can align resources to create equity and collaborate across cultures, Dayton can thrive together. Drawing from historical lessons and ancestral wisdom, she sees the city’s diversity as a strength, emphasizing the need for love, interdependence, and overcoming fear and separation.

Ideas for a Brighter Future

Darsheel hopes to see more resources invested in youth programs, particularly those that provide authentic and creative expression and holistic healing opportunities outside of school, where they can be wrapped in love and community
