Robert Salinas
Background and Journey to the U.S.
Robert Salinas emigrated from Mexico to the United States in 1949 at the age of 4, accompanied by his 22-year-old mother and 2-year-old sister. His father, already in the U.S., had been waiting for their green cards. Like many immigrants, Robert's parents sought the opportunity and a better life for their family, something they felt was lacking in their home country. “I learned and spoke English at school, but when I came home, I had to speak Spanish since both of my parents, Saul and Olga, only spoke Spanish. Being bilingual was an essential part of growing up.”
Building a Life in Dayton
In 1989, Robert and his wife Darci, along with their three daughters, moved to Dayton, Ohio. At the time, Robert was living in Toledo and had a well-established career, but when asked to help start a new business in Dayton, he was really intrigued by the challenge. He helped launch a manufacturing facility that grew into a very successful venture. After years of hard work, Robert bought out his partner and renamed the company Salinas Industries, Inc., which he ran for 22 years before retiring. Robert adds that Spanish was very important for his business. Salians industries was an automotive parts supplier to assembly plants not only in the United States, but also supplied parts to Ford Motor Company and Chrysler plants in Argentina and Mexico, and those customers felt very comfortable doing business with someone who spoke their language.
Feeling Welcome in Dayton
Having made several business trips to Dayton during his time in Toledo, Robert was already familiar with the area. Upon moving, he found the people in Dayton to be incredibly cordial and friendly. He felt welcomed and valued, and this sense of warmth reinforced his belief that Dayton was a great place for business and for building a life.
Contributions to the City of Dayton
Robert remains deeply connected to the Hispanic community in Dayton. He served as president of the Dayton Hispanic Chamber of Commerce for 12 years and is an active member of Latinos Unidos en Dayton. He is also involved with the Miami Valley Community ID Program, working to support and uplift the local immigrant community.
Vision for Dayton’s Future
Robert is optimistic about the future of diversity in Dayton. He has witnessed various city administrations recognizing the strength and value of diversity, and he believes this legacy will continue. He is especially hopeful for the continued growth and success of Welcome Dayton, the city’s initiative to support immigrants, and hopes it continues to receive full support from the community.
