Youssef A. Elzein is originally from Lebanon. After graduating from high school, he was inspired to become an agricultural engineer. However, the chaos and violence of a civil war in Lebanon shattered his dream. Consequently, he set his sights on seeking higher education in The U.S. where he earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in civil engineering from Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois. It was also during his time at Bradley that he met his wife, with whom he has shared a 40-year journey.

In 1998, Youssef and his family relocated from Peoria to Dayton, Ohio, following a job opportunity. Since then, they have made Dayton their permanent home, with their children graduating from both Mad River Local Schools and the University of Dayton.

Experience in Dayton

Youssef has had a fulfilling career in Dayton, having worked for 16 years with the City of Dayton’s Department of Aviation, both as an employee and a consultant. He has also sought to engage in public service, running for political office in the Mad River School Board and Montgomery County Commission elections. His experience has given him a strong foundation in advocating for the immigrant community and encouraging their active participation in the political process.

Over the years, Youssef has been grateful for the kindness and support of his neighbors and the larger Dayton community. Even during times of widespread Islamophobia, the unwavering support from his local community made Dayton feel like home. He emphasizes the importance of kindness, compassion, and unity in helping to create a welcoming environment for all.

Contributions to the City of Dayton

Youssef has made substantial contributions to Dayton through his work in both public service and volunteerism. He has been actively involved in numerous organizations such as the American Red Cross, the Dayton International Peace Museum and the Dayton Arab American Forum (DAAF). In addition, Youssef has worked with various initiatives, including affordable housing, health care reform, and education for all.

The Future of Diversity in Dayton

Youssef recognizes the progress Dayton has made toward becoming a more diverse city, but he stresses the importance of ensuring that all minority and underserved communities feel the benefits of this growth. He believes that both city and county governments must prioritize inclusivity and ensure that everyone can participate in and benefit from the region’s economic progress.

He calls for a stronger focus on equity alongside equality, highlighting the need for improvements in social services such as education, affordable housing, healthcare, and wealth distribution. Youssef believes Dayton has a talented, underrepresented population whose innovative potential should be tapped into to create a sustainable and brighter future for the city.

Vision for the Future of Dayton

In the future, Youssef hopes to see Dayton continue its economic recovery while addressing critical social needs. He envisions a city where diverse communities are fully integrated and where all residents, regardless of their background, can succeed.
