Severa Muka Mwiza
Background and Journey to the U.S.
Severa Muka Mwiza, originally from Rwanda, arrived in the United States in February 2000, seeking peace and a better life. She and her husband settled in Dayton, Ohio. The transition was not without challenges—Severa had never experienced such cold weather, and the landscape was starkly different from her homeland. Despite the welcoming nature of the people in Dayton, the cold weather and the unfamiliar environment posed immediate obstacles.
Upon arriving, Severa and her husband had no means of survival while awaiting their asylum papers. They sought refuge at the House of the People, a local shelter where charitable individuals provided food and essential services to help them get by during this difficult time.
Integration into the Dayton Community
Severa’s easygoing nature and her love for connecting with people made it easier for her to integrate into the Dayton community. While waiting for her asylum documents, Severa made the decision to learn English, volunteering at various local organizations such as Goodwill, her local church, and Catholic Social Services. This allowed her not only to improve her language skills but also to assist other newcomers in the community.
Her volunteer work involved helping immigrants navigate daily life, acquire new skills, and access essential resources. She also contributed to advocacy efforts aimed at improving services for those who had recently arrived in Dayton. This involvement did more than help Severa integrate into Dayton; it also helped others settle into their new lives.
Contributions to Dayton
Severa continues to contribute to the city’s cultural and economic growth. Through her small business, La Viva Rwanda, which operates under Missing Peace Art Space and Gallery at the 2nd Street Market in Dayton, Severa exposes the Dayton community to Rwandan culture. Her business serves as an educational space that helps others understand the immigrant experience, shedding light on how immigrants contribute to American society.
The Future of Diversity in Dayton
Severa believes that Dayton is a truly unique city, enriched by its cultural diversity. She values the city’s embrace of different cultures and its dedication to creating an environment where everyone feels at home. The wide range of social events and cultural festivals gives Dayton a vibrant, inclusive atmosphere where people from all walks of life can come together and share their experiences.
Vision for the Future of Dayton
Severa hopes to see Dayton continue to thrive as a city of peace and unity. She envisions Dayton as a city where people of all cultures can contribute to the growth of the community, where immigrants are seen as integral to the development of the city’s social fabric. Her work with La Viva Rwanda and outreach efforts in the community, reflects her commitment to building a stronger, more inclusive Dayton.
