Background and Journey to the U.S.

Imelda Ayala Ramos, originally from Mexico, moved to the United States in 1999. She and her husband, an American citizen, made the decision to relocate to the U.S. in search of a better life for their daughters. Imelda, a professional nurse, initially struggled with the transition to life in a new country, particularly due to language barriers and cultural differences. At first, she felt disconnected from her true self, unable to communicate effectively and unable to practice her profession, as she became dependent on her husband and took on the role of a housewife.

Imelda describes Dayton as a peaceful and welcoming city, one that has become a part of her just as she has become part of it. As she settled into her new life, she noticed how the city slowly embraced her, and over time, she was able to embrace it in return. Imelda hopes her journey can inspire others, especially immigrants, to feel empowered, independent, and capable of thriving in a new environment. She emphasizes the importance of communication and inclusion, recalling a humorous moment when she struggled to communicate at a department store, only to rely on gestures to make herself understood.

Imelda is deeply committed to giving back to her community in Dayton. She has dedicated herself to helping Latino communities by empowering individuals and families with the knowledge and leadership skills necessary to improve their lives. Through her work at El Puente Education Center in the Old North Dayton neighborhood, she provides valuable information, connects people with resources, and helps them navigate the challenges of adapting to a new culture.

In addition to her community work, Imelda is an active member of her church, where she serves and supports parishioners, whether they are newcomers or long-established residents. She is passionate about helping others and fostering a sense of community among those who need it most.

For over 20 years, Imelda has led a Mexican folkloric dance group, helping to share and preserve Mexican culture and heritage with the wider community. This work fills her with pride, as it allows her to celebrate her roots and educate others about the beauty of Mexican traditions.
