Bayram Gulaliev
Background and journey to the u.s.
Bayram Gulaliev, born in 1988, spent his early years in Russia as an Ahiska Turk. For much of his life, he faced constant challenges, including discrimination and attempts to deport his community. In 2003, an organization known as MOM began accepting applications for Ahiska Turks to immigrate to the United States. On August 9, 2005, Bayram and his family arrived in Portland, Oregon, where they began a new chapter in their lives.
coming to Dayton
The first year in the U.S. was difficult for Bayram and his family. The cultural differences, language barrier, and lack of familiar faces made the transition hard. However, they persevered and gradually adapted to their new environment. In 2009, after hearing about affordable housing in Dayton, Ohio—where house prices were sometimes as low as $5,000 or $6,000—many members of the Ahiska Turk community moved to the city to rebuild their homes. Bayram and his family joined them in 2013, seeking to be closer to their community.
In Dayton, they bought a new home, built a mosque and community center in the Old North Dayton neighborhood with the help of fellow community members, and Bayram began serving his community. Over time, he formed strong connections with local city officials and law enforcement.
A Focus on Service and Growth
Bayram’s goal has always been to support and serve his community. His dedication led him to form relationships with key local figures, including the Mayor of Huber Heights who connected him with the city’s Culture & Diversity Citizen Action Commission. Eager to seize the opportunity, Bayram joined the Commission and he has since been actively involved in local events and community service. He feels deeply grateful to live in Dayton, where he feels safe and appreciated. Bayram is dedicated to giving back through volunteer work, including overseeing the Ahiska Turkish community's youth wrestling program, and actively contributing to the well-being of his new home country.
Contributing to Dayton's Growth
In addition to his community service, Bayram is also contributing to Dayton's economy. He has opened a trucking business, providing job opportunities for local residents and growing alongside the city. His entrepreneurial spirit helps to create a more vibrant and thriving Dayton.
The Future of Diversity in Dayton
Bayram recognizes the progress Dayton has made in promoting diversity and is optimistic about the future. He praises the efforts of Welcome Dayton and believes that immigrants, like him, will continue to play a key role in making the city more diverse and inclusive. Bayram encourages everyone to keep working toward these goals and believes that together, the community can move forward with unity and purpose.
