Background and Journey to the U.S.

Tesfalem Mehari, originally from Eritrea, arrived in the U.S. in 2019. Growing up in the small village of Endadashim, he never imagined a life beyond his country. However, after facing the challenges of poverty and hardship in Eritrea, Tesfalem sought a brighter future. His journey took him to a refugee camp in Ethiopia, where, after eight years, he received the life-changing news that his family had been accepted for resettlement in the U.S. This marked a turning point in his life, transitioning from a refugee to a new American, ready to begin again.

Challenges and Triumphs in the U.S.

The language barrier was one of the biggest hurdles Tesfalem faced after arriving in the U.S. Adjusting to a new culture, learning new social norms, and even basic tasks like learning to drive at the age of 30 were major challenges. Yet, Tesfalem remained determined, enrolling in an MBA program at Wright State University and finding a job. These experiences shaped him into the person he is today—resilient, adaptable, and deeply committed to his new community.

Finding a Home in Dayton

Dayton became Tesfalem’s first home in the U.S. Through Welcome Dayton, Tesfalem found opportunities to connect with other immigrants and refugees. His involvement in the City of Dayton’s 10-week leadership program, Neighborhood Leadership Institute, helped him build meaningful relationships. Through his initiative, ERiDayton, a local non-profit organization, he has fostered a supportive community for Eritrean refugees, encouraging inclusion and engagement.

Contributions to Dayton

Tesfalem actively supports his community in various ways. As an interpreter, he helps Eritrean families navigate their new environment, ensuring they have access to vital resources. In his role as an employment specialist at Catholic Social Services of the Miami Valley, he helps new Americans find jobs, empowering them to build better lives. He also promotes Eritrean culture through local events, like at the Global Artisan Market at 2nd Street Market, and shares his story at community panels to inspire others. Through these efforts, Tesfalem strengthens Dayton's diverse cultural fabric and encourages community engagement.

Tesfalem is optimistic about the future of diversity in Dayton. He believes the city has become a model of inclusivity, embracing a rich tapestry of cultures. As Dayton continues to celebrate its differences, it can foster community initiatives, support diverse businesses, and promote cultural events to ensure everyone feels respected and represented. He hopes to see continued support for local businesses, increased investment in education and healthcare, and more opportunities for economic growth
